Militants again attack police office

SRINAGAR, India (AP) - Suspected guerrillas again fired at the heavily guarded police headquarters Wednesday minutes before the chief minister of the region arrived to inspect the damage caused by two days of fighting, police said.

Three rifle-launched grenades hit an army office next to the office of the anti-terrorist police headquarters in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu-Kashmir state.

A fourth grenade hit the police office, but did not explode, officials said on condition of anonymity.

The attack came minutes before state Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was to arrive at the area to inspect the damage caused by two days of fighting at the police office.

Three Kashmiri guerrillas raided the building Monday. They were killed after two days of fierce fighting, which also killed at least 10 police and paramilitary soldiers dead.

Separatists have been fighting security forces since 1989 to make Kashmir independent. Some of them want Kashmir to break away and join neighboring Pakistan, while others want it to remain independent.

India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in its entirety. The Himalayan state is divided between them following two wars.
